A Jewish family's struggle to survive in World War II Poland. They are the Heshls, a family of five, the father a writer, the mother a seamstress. The mother escapes from a death camp by digging under a fence, a blond son is saved by pretending to be a Christian. By a Polish-Canadian writer.
